Temperature correction of blood-gas and pH measurements.

چکیده
We critically review formulas for temperature correction of pH, pCO2, and pO2 measurements in whole blood and the clinical usefulness of these formulas. We discuss both the theoretical derivation and experimental verification of temperature-induced changes. We recommend when to use and when not to use these formulas, based upon the clinical interpretation of these assays.

TEMPERATURE CORRECTION OF ARTERIAL BLOOD pH AND CO2 TENSION IN NEWBORN INFANTS: A NEW SOLUTION FOR AN OLD PROBLEM
The acid-base status and arterial blood gas change with temperature variation. To determine the changes in arterial pH and pC02, arterial blood samples of 50 neonates with different clinical conditions were examined at temperatures of 35 to 42°C with an increment of 0.5° C, which resulted in two nonlinear equations with perfect fit on data. The temperature correction factors of these equati...

متن کاملAcute Effects of Two Energy Drinks on Anaerobic Power and Blood Lactate & PH Recovery in Male Athletes
In order to compare the acute effects of OR and Megabasic (two energy drinks) by a placebo, 24 volunteer male athletes (age: 24.3±2.03 yrs, height 173.56±7.02cm and weight 75.43±3.07kg) participated in two consecutive RAST tests by 40 min rest interval in between within 3 randomly divided groups. There were six times blood sampling (before and also 2 and 4 min after than both tests) in ord...
متن کاملDoes pleural fluid pH change significantly at room temperature during the first hour following thoracentesis?
BACKGROUND Usually, pleural fluid (PF) pH is measured immediately following thoracentesis, and if there is any delay in the measurement, the PF sample is preserved on ice. OBJECTIVE To determine if PF pH changes significantly at room temperature during the first hour following thoracentesis. DESIGN Prospective, self-controlled. SETTING Tertiary care center. PATIENTS All patients undergo...
متن کاملAir bubbles and temperature effect on blood gas analysis.
The effect of temperature, time of storage, and presence of air bubbles in specimens for blood gas analysis was studied. The results show that air bubbles in a 10% proportion are undesirable because of significant elevation in the PO2, and the storage of anaerobic blood samples at room temperature (25 degrees C) is acceptable when measurements are done within the first 20 minutes.
